Burton 5 Dudley Kingswinford 31 on Nov 11th 2006
After some reorganisation due to players failing to turn up Burton started well and for the first ten minutes took the play to the visitors and looked the better of two quite evenly matched sides. But unfortunately some unforced errors began to creep into Burton’s play and Dudley took full advantage of these to score two converted tries, much against the run of play. This seemed to deflate the Burton side and although they never stopped trying they were unable to cope with the experience of the Dudley side that included three or four first teamers coming back from injury. A great take saw Nick Thurman tap the ball down to set up a good rolling maul and Burton’s forwards made thirty metres before John Hamilton broke down the blind side and drew the defence before feeding Tristan Gill who raced in from thirty metres to score Burton’s only points. Dudley added a further try before the break to take their lead to 5-19.
After the break Burton continued to make too many errors that allowed the opposition to build on their lead and two further tries took Dudley’s final score to 5-31. But the Burton side were not giving up easily as they continued try and run the ball as much as they could. Ben Simpson and Adrian Varney did their utmost to set up moves but the visitors defence was very well organised and stopped most of these efforts early on. Another attacking effort saw Mark Tweddle, John Drage and Andy Betteridege combine well in a sweeping move that saw the latter tackled five metres short of the line. A typical Dave Viles burst saw him break three or four tackles before passing to Tom Gregory, who as ever was always in support of every move, and he slipped the ball to Sean Green who was only stopped by a wonderful tackle. But all of Burton’s efforts were in vain as they slipped to a 31-5 defeat, where the score did not really show the credit they deserved for the efforts they had put in.
