Hinckley 17 Burton 14 on Nov 18th 2006

With some reorganisation that saw Ian Cartwright come in at centre Burton welcomed back Gavin Cole from injury in this game against Hinckley with a set of threequaters that with one exception were all under 22 years of age. Burton began the game by doing all the attacking and after five minutes Cole marked his return with a fine try to give the visitors the lead. But slack tackling let the home side back into the game as once again Burton’s errors were pounced on by a well organised Hinckley side whose back row were a continual threat to Burton. Hinckley scored three tries and converted one to run up a 17-5 lead before the half time whistle.

After the break Burton began to show more discipline and the unforced errors stopped and it was the visiting team that took play to the opposition. Ill discipline by Hinckley gave Cole the chance to reduce the deficit on several occasions and this he did three times including one kick from inside his own half. But despite all the pressure apart from the penalties Burton were unable to add any further scores. Although Tom Gregory and John Drage were both stopped inches short of the line after some fine powerful runs. The make up of this current side says much for the young players within the Burton club with most of the side being under 23, while the experience of Nick Thurman, Rich Wilton and Ian Baker steadies the ship. Burton’s second half performance showed how well they can play when they stop making unforced errors and let the ball do the work rather than trying to force play and the more this side plays together its blend of experience and youth will start to churn out the victories.
