Lichfield 15 Burton 10 on Mar 24th 2007
With the three Colts Luke Peach, Ian Cartwright and Tom Mayne included in the starting line-up Burton Development XV took to the field against local neighbours Lichfield and soon had the home side under pressure with the pack producing two good rolling mauls making plenty of ground. But Lichfield neutralised this by gaining the initial push in set pieces and wheeled the scrums without being penalised. However Burton continued to apply pressure with Tom Mayne putting in some superb tackles. Unfortunately, against the run of play, the home side managed to score an unconverted try from one of the set scrums.
Burton responded with more pressure and looked extremely dangerous when spinning the ball out wide, but too many forced passes cost vital possession. Just before half-time Ian Cartwright reduced Lichfield’s lead with a well struck penalty from some thirty-five metres out.
The second half started with Lichfield managing to make much more ground and all the forward pressure saw them awarded a penalty try to increase their lead to 10-3. With the home side stopping Burton’s attempts of passing the ball out wide the game stayed very much in the Burton half. Eventually all this pressure saw Lichfield drive over from five metres out for a third try and take their lead to 15-3. But the Burton side never gave up and good quick ball saw Gavin Cole race fifty metres for a try that Cartwright converted. Despite a frantic last ten minutes Burton could not get another score and so returned home the losing side from a thoroughly enjoyable game.
