Burton 39 Malvern 5 on Dec 2nd 2006
An abundance of players meant that Burton were able to offer assistance to the Malvern side by loaning them players, and Gary Potts played front row for them from the start but during the game the switching of the extra players helped keep the game even. Burton were not at home in the first half of this match and allowed Malvern to dominate possession and looked to be the more organised side and wanted the ball more than their hosts. Eventually they went ahead with a well worked try that gave them a 5-0 lead but a penalty for offside allowed Gareth Cogan, returning from injury, the chance to show how his kicking skills had been missed. He slotted home the kick to reduce the deficit to 3-5 at the break.
After the interval Burton began to show more aggression and started to ruck well giving good quick ball to Ben Peach who released his threequaters setting up Tristan Gill for three tries as he put Burton on top in the game. Burton kept on the pressure and soon James Kirkpatrick added a further try after another good forward drive followed by quick ball. But once again it was up to the never ageing legs of the evergreen Ian Baker to produce the best score of the game. The move started in the Burton 22 and went through numerous pairs of hands but after seventy metres who but captain Ian Baker was on hand to take the final pass and dive over the line to show that his score of last week was no fluke. With Cogan adding the last of his three conversions this final score capped an excellent second half performance and gave Burton a well-earned 39-5 victory. This win was made even better by the return from injury of Peach, Cogan, Sean Green and Ben Waldron plus the introduction of CJ van Zyl, a South African new to the club, who showed skills that are very welcome to the club.
