Newport 10 Burton 50 on Nov 25th 2006
After an horrendous start to the day owing to a lack of players and road traffic accidents en route Burton eventually arrived at Newport 5 minutes before the schedule start time and had to get changed and kick-off without any warm-up or preparation. With no recognised hooker in the squad John Drage moved to prop and Richard Paupe played at hooker. In order to accommodate this Ian Baker played second row, John Hamilton switched to No8 and Mark Ovens played at scrum half. But despite all of these changes Burton played exceptionally well in all aspects of the game saying a great deal for the versatility and spirit of this young Burton side. The forwards produced numerous rolling mauls and produced ample quick ball for the backs to take some lovely angles and lines of running from. All of this produced a total of eight excellent tries demonstrating superb support and inter passing amongst all the team as Burton gave their hosts a comprehensive lesson in open rugby.
One typical example of how the experience and youth combined within the team was seen when veteran Ian Baker just managed to reach the line to touch down before his legs gave out after running some sixty metres to take the final pass from a move that started deep in Burton’s half. Johnathan Hamilton showed his adaptability by snatching two tries from his preferred role at No 8 and with Steve Cramp at last playing in his favoured position of full back also scoring twice the Burton team spared no quarter as they cut loose. Tom Gregory, Duncan Johnson and Gavin Cole also scored tries, while Cole converted five of the eight try haul to produce excellent win for Burton on a day that started out so miserably
