Sutton Coldfield 20 Burton 24 on Nov 4th 2006

Burton started well with a try in the first minute from a line out peel that saw Nick Thurman tap the ball to Dave Viles who powered his way over for a try. But Sutton hit back as they showed more desire for the ball and some excellent mauls saw them rewarded with a score as they upped the tempo of their game. Both sides were displaying plenty of skills, as the ball was move across the field by both sets of backs with the forwards covering and chasing in constant support. A penalty put Sutton ahead but quick release from the restart saw the ball spun out along the Burton backs and Ben Simpson’s miss pass found Tristan Gill who raced over for a try that Gareth Sutton converted to restore Burton’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Sutton started the second half playing at pace and both sets of forwards battled it out for control. Burton controlled set pieces but Sutton played the referee better in the loose and Burton’s ‘nice’ attitude cost them plenty of possession. Sutton’s centre broke through some poor defence to score a try after his kick ahead bounced to one side and left Burton flat-footed. With the hosts now leading 15-12 Burton fought back and exerted pressure on the home line but no score was forth coming until Adrian Varney seized on a loose ball that shot out of a ruck and he raced over the line to score and put Burton ahead by 15-17. But with three minutes remaining Sutton broke clear of their own line to race up field and score an unconverted try to snatch the lead at 20-17. The restart saw Burton charge back at the home line and as the forwards won the ball it was spun out to Ben Simpson who switched direction to find a gap that he raced through to touch down under the posts. Sutton’s conversion took the score to 20-24 and give Burton a victory in the well-contested match.
