Derby
under 13,s were the visitors to the Oxhay to day. And from the
kick off the Burton pack put Derby under pressure with some strong
running from captain Andy Tattersall, the Burton pack piled the
pressure on but the Derby defence held firm, Derby had their first
attack after twenty minuets of the first half and scored a try
which was converted. Burton put more pressure on, and a surging
run by Charlie Wainman went over for a try which was not converted,
half time 7-5 to Derby. In the second half both teams seemed to
put more effort in to their game. With the defences having to work
hard on both sides Derby broke away and scored a second try which
was not converted,Burton raised their game towards the end and
almost got on level terms with a powerful run.
Match 2
Both sides made changes to their packs and a strong run from the Derby winger
saw them take the lead with a fine try, which was not converted. This seemed
to wake the Burton pack up and a good run and try by Andrew Tattersall levelled
the scores. Burton increased the pressure but didnt increase the score. Half
time score: 5 - 5.
In the second half Burton upped their efforts and another try was won by Charlie
Wainman which was not converted. Some strong defensive work by Burton frustrated
the Derby pack and a third try for Burton by Ed Watkins made the game safe. A
better performance in this game by all the Burton pack.

Derby 5 |
It was
Burton under 13’s first game of the season, on
a full size pitch. A vital victory was won to boost confidence
at the beginning of the new season.
Nuneaton were an organised and physical side, however,
were held by Burton with stalwart defending.
The first half ended scoreless
and both coaches urged their teams to greater efforts.
Nuneaton at one point broke through the seemingly
impenetrable Burton defence and after a half pitch
run by the Nuneaton back he was brought to ground
by Charlie Wainwright and dropped the ball before
crossing the line.
Nuneaton became frustrated and indiscipline
started to show which resulted in penalty after penalty
to Burton. Finally Nuneaton’s
indiscipline worked against them and after a botched
clearance by Nuneaton, Burton had a well placed scrum-down. Andrew
Tattersal surged over
the line after some excellent forward play and the
resulting try was converted by Sam Morley.
The game continued for a seemingly
endless period, however, Nuneaton could not break
the Burton line.
Burton defeated Syston by 3
tries to 1 with an excellent performance from both forward's and
back's. Burton had possession of the ball for the majority of the
match in Syston's half.
At half time Burton were in the lead by 10 points to 5 with tries from Dominic
Minns and with a magnificent run from well within his own half from a kick off
Edward Watkins. We saw yet another try saving tackle front full back Tom Sharratt
which kept Burton in the lead.
The second half was spent in the Syston half with good rucking and mauling from
the forwards and strong tackling from the back's.
Captain Andrew Tattersall (TATS) led by example with an outstanding performance
all round and controlling the team well.
The second try was scored by Nathan Taylor after a hard long battle with the
Syston defence.
Congratulations to Referee John Franklin on his debut, again with a good performance

Burton under 13s are through to the next round of the Staffordshire cup by beating Longton 0-51. In a sadly one-sided match Burton dominated every aspect of the game. Following 2 strong scrums Edward Watkins broke through to score within 5 minutes of the kick off. Converted from a difficult position by Dominic Minns, the Crofters where 7 nil up. This set the pattern for the rest of the game. Charlie Wainman scored next and then again by running the ball brilliantly some 30m straight back from the kick off. Next of the try scorers was Dominic Minns as a result of a jinxing 45m run. Charlie then scored his hatrick which was converted by Johnny Briggs. Another excellent run from Dom left the way open for Ed to add his second. A good conversion effort from Johnny was bang on target but fell just short. Burton looked unstoppable, but then Longton broke through and with one of their largest players in full flight it fell upon Tom Sharratt to make a fearless try saving tackle. But Longton’s spirits where up and following a smart interception, Burton had to rely again on the tackling of Tom to save a try scoring opportunity. The half time whistle came with the score at 36-0.
Not long into the 2nd half, Joe Franklin, from half way in his own half made another great run to score. Now Burton turned up the heat and 2 minutes later Ed made a charging run to register his hatrick of the game. Despite good efforts by Sam Morley neither try was converted. This left Burton needing just one try to pass the magical 50 mark and get the game ended. Several times Burton moved the ball out wide to Tom Dean, only to be thwarted by the Longton defence. Then another great tackle on the try line denied Joe F his second try some 10 minutes into the second half. A forward pass by Burton and subsequent good defending by Longton saw Burton back at Longton’s 22m line. However, this was Longton last stand as Andrew Tattersall capped his captain’s performance with a try after a surging run. With 51 on the board the game ended and Burton where through to the next round. A great team effort, Burton was always in control, with players like Matt Martin working tirelessly throughout.

After a slow start and a few handling errors Burton went on the attack with some strong forward tactics and it wasn't long before Edward Watkins scored the first try of the match for the home side with the conversion narrowly missed from out wide.
From then on in most of the play was in Mansfield's half with Burton dominating. Unselfish play from Jo Franklin earn Ed Watkins his second try which was converted by Sam Morley. Mansfield broke loose into Burton's half and scored their only try of the match after some poor defensive play from Burton. Just on half time Captain Andrew Tattersall ran in Burton's third try, making it 17 - 5 to the Crofters.
After the break Burton continued putting pressure on the Mansfield backs. From a scrum, fine play by Jake Manning scored Burtons fourth try which was also converted by Sam Morley.

Burton Under 13s were away to Tamworth today, and Tamworth were obviously up for this game after losing heavily to the Burton pack just three weeks ago.
Tamworth went straight onto the attack with some good forward play, but the Burton defence held firm with some strong tackles from Tom Dean & Dewi Wiliams, the game was hard fought but towards half time got a little bit scrappy , half time score 0-0.
Burton made changes to thier pack at the interval and after some strong forward play by Tamworth John Briggs cleared the ball from defence with a great kick to set Ed Watkins off on a terrific run to score under the post. Tamworth came back strong from the kick off with a try in the corner after some fine forward play, but Burton came back themselves with a great run and try from Andy Tattersall under the post from which Nathan Wrathall converted, Zak Meares-Davies had a good game in defence for Burton.
The final Score 12- 5 another good win for the Crofters

Burton 10 |
As soon as we heard that we'd been drawn against Lichfield we knew that the Under 13s were in for a very tough match and we weren't proved wrong.
Right from kick off the going was tough for both sides with strong tackling, rucking and mauling. Burton put on the pressure and settled down with some good strong forward play in the Lichfield half.
Lichfield defended exceptionally well keeping Burton away from their try line but the Crofters did eventually break through the Lichfield defence allowing Ed Watkins to score their first try.
From the try Burton were back in the Lichfield half piling on the pressure and it wasn't long before Ed Watkins broke lose to score his and Burton's second try with a great run.
Lichfield came storming back at the Crofters, pushing all their players forward, Burton defended well but Lichfield with some very good play scored a try before half time making it 10 - 5 to Burton at the interval
The second half started just as fierce as the first, but this time it was Burton doing most of the defending, and this they did with some style with some try saving tackles from Nathan Wrathall, Dominic Minns, Tom Sharratt, Mat Martin, Dewi Williams.
Lichfield continued with the pressure and Burton just couldn't break away, half way through the half Burton conceded their second try once again from some outstanding play by Lichfield.
Burton were soon back on the defence but they kept their composure, discipline and maintained their strong defensive play.
The final whistle was blown with the scores equal at 10 points each but Burton go through to the semi-final on the ruling that if all is equal the away team win.

Loughborough 10 |
This week saw Burton under 13's away to the Loughborough B team. In some terrible weather they ran out comfortable 34-10 winners, to maintain there excellent season.
The game started well with Charlie Wainman breaking through from the kick off to make a very early score, which was not converted. From the restart Burton put pressure on the home side, but it was from their own half that Loughborough broke through the Burton line and with a great individual run they scored a try which was not converted. Loughborough were level and keen to put more on the board. They pressured from the restart and again the same Loughborough player powered through to score his second. A failed conversion meant that Burton now trailed by 5. Burton needed to raise their game and tighten up on the tackling. This they did. Following the restart Burton powered forward and it wasn’t long before Burton were on level terms thanks to some great mauling and a try by John Briggs. The conversion fell short and game was back on.
Following a closely contested period of play, with improved tackling by Burton, Ed Watkins broke away to score his first of the match. Again Burton failed to convert. From the restart Burton looked to press home their increased momentum and a good sequence of play resulted in a great run from Joe Franklin who was held up just short of the Loughborough line. The Burton pack was there in support determined to get another score before the halftime whistle. Joe Saxon made some vital yards and then passed the ball to Ed for a simple score and his second. This was not converted and the halftime whistle blew with Burton 20-10 in the lead.
With a number of Burton substitutions made, the second half got under way. Burton continued to put pressure on Loughborough, moving the ball out wide on a number of occasions to Thomas Dean, who was only stopped from breaking through by some determined tackling. A great run and pass from Sebastian Jackson in his own half, set up Dominic Minns to make one of his trade mark runs to score under the posts. This was converted by Sam Morley and Burton led 27 – 10.
From the restart Loughborough tried to contain Burton in the center, but again some great running led to Matt Martin’s first try for Burton, which was converted again by Sam Morley. As the final whistle blew Burton had won 34-10 and it stopped raining!

Burton 46 |
This was Burtons twelfth match of the season and they seemed to get better as a team with each match.
From the kick off the Burton pack forced the Lions back into their own half and immediately won a scrum against the head and from this the ball went out to Jake Manning who scored a fine try. Burton were playing some really good rugby and Ed Watkins picked the ball up and jinked his way through the Lions defence to score under the posts, which was converted by Sam Morley.
Jon Briggs was having a very good game ripping the ball out in the mauls, one of which set up Dominic Minns Who ran half the length of the pitch and with some inter-passing between himself and Charlie Wainman, Dominic went over for a fantastic try. The Burton supporters were now beginning to purr like Lions at this display. The Burton pack were now like Lions themselves and Jon Briggs rounded off a good day for himself by scoring a try under the posts which was converted by Sam Morley. At half time the score was 24 - 0
During the half time interval Burton made some changes to their pack but this didn’t detract any from the Burton game. Showing that Burton under 13s have strength in depth.
Into the second half Tom Worthy picked the ball up wide on the left and powered his way over the line for his first try for Burton, and what a powerful run it was. Captain Andrew Tattersall also had yet another great game and with a surging run down the middle of the field went over the line for a try under the posts, and again was converted by Sam Morley. The Lions by now just could not get the ball out of their own half of the field and Charlie Wainman on a charge forward won the ball and ran it over the line for a try which was not converted. Joe Franklin also worked hard for the team pushing forward keeping the pressure on the Leicester pack.

Mrkt Bosworth 10 |
Burton Under 13s were stunned by a try from the Visitors in under 30 seconds on a crisp winter’s morning. Bosworth looked a lively outfit and certainly took the game to Burton having no regard for Burton ’s enviable win record this season.
Burton organised themselves and after a period of sustained pressure a deserved try by Ed Watkins brought the game back on to a level footing. Burton now asserted themselves on the Visitors and after two excellent tries following prolonged pressure by Andrew Tattersall and Charlie Wayman, the first half ended 15-10 to Burton .
The second half began enthusiastically from both teams however Burton now had the measure of the Visitors and extended their lead to 20-10. A penalty to Burton put Bosworth under further pressure and they became flustered in front of their posts and Tattersall surged over again to extend the lead. Bosworth now crumbled and a further try by John Briggs, successfully converted by Nathan Wrathall, left the final score at 34-10.
Burton ’s record continues with 11 wins out of 12 games, a highly commendable beginning to the season.

| Stoke 7 | v |
Burton 30 |
Burton under 13’s made the trip down the A50 to take on old rivals Stoke in an eagerly awaited clash. To start the New Year the coaches had a relatively full squad to pick from .
During the past few matches the team have been very slow starters and yet again proved that this is an area to work on. Not until a fantastic scrum against the head by hooker Nathan Taylor in centre field led to the ball spinning down the Burton back line to wing Charlie Wainman who flew past all in his way to open and settle the Burton team. 5-0
The rest of the period was actually controlled by Stoke who held sway in the possession stakes and territory. Silly handling errors and needless infringements around the ruck and maul handed the iniative to Stoke and a great move by the gifted fly half and fast moving centre led to Stoke scoring under the posts. It must be said that Burton were guilty of too many missed tackles at this point. The conversion was successful to put Stoke just in front at the end of the first period. 5-7
In the interval it was noticeable how animated the coaching team were putting their points across to the Burton team. Burton came out fired up and really defended really well as Stoke put them under increasing pressure. At this point the Stoke dangerous inside centre made a clean break through the heart of Burton’s back line (yet again with a few missed tackles to blame), but fullback Tom Sherratt yet again as in many previous matches put in a hard hitting try saving tackle.
This seemed to fire up the Burton team and a fantastic team try followed. Defence turned into attack with first Ed Watkins making a great break, superb backing up by Andrew Tattersall then offloading to the ever-improving Tom Worthy. Tom jinked his way infield , passing the ball to centre Dominic Minns to finish off a great move.
Stoke weren’t finished yet ,and tested the Burton resilient defence. Last ditch tackles by players too many to name ,but a notable kick to touch by Nathan Wrathall from his own line with the whole of the Stoke back row coming at him is worthy of note.
Burton now seemed to shift into another gear and worked a great try from the back of a scrum with Jake Manning going over to make the score 15- 7. Another try from set piece for the same try scorer after improved work by the Burton forwards at the line out. Stoke now seemed to fold as Burton took a vice like grip on the match. Running the ball out of defence led to a more than well earnt try for the hard working loose head prop Tom Worthy.
Burton rounded off the scoring with yet another score for now fly half Dom Minns as the score finished at 30- 7 in Burton’s favour.
All who witnessed today will agree that the scoreline flattered Burton . Improvements in the ruck and maul area are a must , but to end on a positive it must be said that a vast improvement at the set piece showed today what a great difference it can make to a scoreline and after a really long morning showed the Burton lads are improving general fitness.

Burton 32 |
Burton piled on the pressure straight from the off with some impressive play, keeping possession of the ball well. Jake Manning went over for Burton's first try having picked the ball up from a strong drive by the forwards. From then on in the Crofters just got stronger and stronger winning their own and Staffords line outs and scrums.
Andrew Tattersall scored Burton's second with a run from the half way line and moments later we saw him execute a fantastic tackle on the opposition right winger preventing what could of been a try scoring opportunity.
When Stafford did create any chances they were soon quashed by good defensive play from Burton, Dominic Minns often clearing the line and also running with the ball taking play well into the opposition half and on one occasion setting up Ed Watkins with his first try. Ed soon scored his second try from some good open play by his teammates. Moments later Ed scored his third try of the match after winning the ball at a line out and a run down the wing. This made it 25 - 0 at the interval for Burton.
Both teams made some changes for the second half and Stafford came out stronger camping in the Burton half for a good period but being unable to cross Burton's try line to gain some points, being prevented by some good tackling and defensive play.
Stafford did have a break mid way through the half when their inside centre picked up the ball from just inside his own half and sprinted towards Burton's try line to score leaving everybody standing, this was converted to make it 25 - 7.
Anrew Tattersall completed the try scoring for the match after a good run down the right wing handing off three or four before touching down between the posts, this was converted by Johnny Briggs.
Today we saw two new players making their debuts for Burton , Prop - Freddie Sherratt and Winger - Sam Heptonstall (welcome)
This was yet another very good performance by the squad with good play all round making it 14 wins from 16.

Newcastle 5 |
Burton had been looking forward to this match since the quarter final as I'm sure Newcastle had and what a great match it was with some brilliant play from both teams.
Right from the start Burton constantly put the pressure on with some good exiting open rugby running the ball well into the Newcastle half only to be stopped again and again with exceptional tackling and defensive play from the away side.
From one attacking move Newcastle knocked the ball forward giving Burton the put in into the scrum 5 meters away from Newcastle's line Burton drove them back and scrum half Jake Manning picked up and went over to score a try for Burton.
The second half started at the same pace as the first (100 mph). From a Burton line out on the right wing Ed Watkins won the ball and went off with another one of his unstoppable sprints straight down the line to score his first and Burtons third try of the match (15 - 0).
Newcastle kept their heads up and continued to come back at Burton and from one of their many attacking moves that followed they broke away with a good run from the centre of the field to score a try in the corner (15 - 5).

Burton 12 |
On a cold but bright February morning Burton under 13's were away to Mansfield under 13's on a pitch that was a bit wanting to say the least.
From the kick off the Crofters went straight on the attack and from the first scrum Burton won the ball against the head, the ball was played out wide to Charlie Wainman who sprinted down the line with the Mansfield backs left in his wake. Charlie cut across the try-line to put the ball down under the posts for Jon Briggs to convert. The Crofters were playing some good Rugby winning the rucks and mauls as well as winning the ball in the scrums. Mansfield were finding it hard to get over the halfway line so solid were the Burton pack. Freddy Sherrett was having a terrific game for Burton and a kick just inside his own half put the ball into the Mansfield corner of the field and from the ruck Burton won the ball for Ed Watkins to go over the line for Burtons second try. Burton playing down the slope put Mansfield under increasing pressure but were unable to increase the score. Half time, 12 - 0.
Burton made some changes to their pack for the start of the second half. Mansfield now playing down the slope put the Crofters under some pressure but the Burton line held out and started to push Mansfield back into their own half for long periods. Burton were still rucking and mauling extremely well moving the ball down the line and were unlucky not to add to the half time score. Alex Stockbridge and Nathen Wrathall had great games for Burton along with the rest of the Burton team. another fine win for Burton, 12 - 0 in a remarkable season for the under 13's, well done to all!

| Stoke 10 | v |
Burton 5 |
A clear bright March day provided perfect backdrop to Burton’s biggest match of the season, the Staffordshire Cup final at Stoke. Stoke, playing down hill, kicked off, the ball was gathered by Burton, but Stoke immediately turned the ball over, passed the ball out well and with a surging run a Stoke player broke through Burton’s defence to score. Burton where down by 5 points and only a minute had passed! Burton kicked off and responded well and through a series excellent sequences of play, Johnny Briggs surged across the try line 5 minutes later to put the first points on the board for Burton and tie the game 5 all.
From the restart the game fell into a familiar pattern Burton would make some good ground only to loose the ball in the rucks and mauls. Stoke would then run ball back at Burton. Here for the first time this season, Burton found themselves being out rucked and pushed of the ball. Likewise in the scrums Burton’s strong pack made no impact on a very determined Stoke team. As the half time whistle blew the honours where equal at 5 all.
Historically slow starters; the expectation was that Burton, with the hill in their favour, would pick up their game in the second half. Sadly this didn’t happen. Stoke continued to dominate up front and showed excellent ball skills with both their hands and feet. It was an excellent kick in to open space from the half way line that gave Stoke their next scoring opportunity. A fleet footed Stoke player beat the Burton defence to the ball. He kicked it on twice, gathered it up and scored in the corner. A fine piece of skill. Although there was some concern expressed that the try came a result of double movement of the ball as it went over the line, the score stood at 10-5 to Stoke.
From the restart Burton pressured Stoke but continued to loose the ball to Stoke who through some great kicking where able to keep Burton back. Burton continued to push forward desperately seeking the score that would get them back in the game. And then a half opportunity. A penalty was awarded to Burton just 5 yards in front of the Stoke posts. Burton elected to run the ball, but uncharacteristically fumbled it and the momentum was gone and with it the cup. Stoke defended well for the remaining few minutes and as the whistle blew Stoke had retained the Under 13’s title.
Although hugely disappointed at not winning, the team can be very proud for reaching the final and for an excellent season thus far with 15 wins and only 2 losses.

Earlsdon 0 |
On a brilliant Sunday morning Earlsden Coventry visited, no doubt, looking for a good result. They were however in for a rude awakening, being given a sound lesson in running rugby.
Within the first three minutes Ed Watkins powered over the line to put the Crofter’s five nil ahead. This try remained unconverted. Sustained Burton pressure followed, the effect being that Burton had camped in their opponents half. The forwards did an excellent job in upsetting Earlsden’s game plan and Andrew Tattersall doubled the score to ten nil. This was subsequently converted by John Briggs putting the score at twelve nil. Earlsden seemed completed non-plussed and were unable to respond. The half-time whistle came, Burton having scored a game seventeen nil.
Earlsden came out in the second half with more resolve and for a while seemed to be able to hold Burton. They could not however breakthrough and after some stalwart defending Burton were able to attack from a defensive line. This resulted in a further try by John Briggs which was subsequently converted. Twenty-two nil.
Further tries followed from Freddie Sherratt and after a weaving run by Tom Dean down the left flank, he was tackled but in the tackle offloaded to Andrew Tattersall to finally crush Earlsden.

Burtons Under 13's were up in the Lake District last week-end on tour . On a rain swept Saturday morning they played Upper Eden RFC . Conditions were difficult and despite a slow start the Crofters were able to secure a comfortable 15:0 win with two tries coming from Andrew Tattersall and a further from Alex Stockbridge.
An Under 13 team from Durham RFC were also in town that morning and Burton went straight back on after the first game to play the visitors from the North East. Durham took an early lead and their powerful back were quick to seize on any opportunities coming their way. In the second half , despite worsening conditions , Burton raised their game and put Durham under considerable pressure. A late Durham score saw the game close at 17:0 to Durham.
On Sunday Burton were back at Kirby Lonsdale, a club they have visited before. Kirby's large forwards looked as though they might cause Burton a lot of problems but the tourists once again rose to the challenge and soon took the lead with a score from Dominic Minns, converted by Jon Briggs . Two further scores were run in from scrum half Jake Manning and a one more carried over by Andrew Gosling and Joe Briggs together. Kirby broke through Burtons line twice to put the final score at 22:12 to the Crofters.
This was a tough tour for the Under 13's but one which the club can be proud of them for. On and off the field every single player on the tour was a credit to their club.

Burton under 13s were invited to Leamington Rugby Club today in quadrangle festival played between Leamington, Earlsden, Stratford and Burton Rugby Club.
Match 1: Stratford 0 Burton 25
In the first of the matches to be played Burton were paired against Stratford. >From the kick off the Crofters were pushed back into their own half and seemed under some pressure but from a scrum in their half of the field Burton won the ball and with some fine interpassing drove down the field for Jake Manning to score a good try. This seemed to be the wake up call for the Crofters who started to play the rugby that they were playing six to eight weeks ago, winning the ball in the rucks and mauls and moving it quickly out to the wings fast and accurately where Charlie Wainman is always happy to receive the ball. On two occasions just before half time Charlie ran the ball over the try line to make the half time score 15 -0 to Burton. The second half was much the same as the first with Andrew Tattersall as always in the thick of it going over to score a fine try making the score 20 - 0 . With a few seconds remaining Jake Manning drove over the line to make the final score 25 - 0 to the Crofters.
Match 2: Earlsdon 0 Burton 10
The second game for Burton was against Earlsden and it was much the same as the first. Burton were playing really good rugby again with Dominic Minns winning the ball and jinking his way down the field to lay the ball out for Charlie Wainman to score a great try. Ed Watkins made some good runs down the wings, he was having a good game for the Crofters. Half time 5 - 0. In the second half Nathan Wrathall picked up the ball and with a scintillating run from his own half of the field was pushed into touch just five meters from the try line and from the resulting line out Burton won the ball for Sam Smith to score his first try for Burton. Full time score 10 - 0.
Match 1: Leamington 0 Burton 40
The third game was against Leamington and all Burton needed to do was draw the game to win the festival. But the Burton pack were determined to win the game in style. Freddie Sherrett was also determined to make his mark on this game with a great run to open the scoring, with some fine support play by Matt Martin. Captain Andrew Tattersall scored the second try of the half after some good support play this time by Freddie Sherrett. Matt Martin was having a great game after a good run he played the ball wide for Charlie Wainmam to score a try. Half time 15 - 0. The Burton side were now well on top, with good runs and trys by Andrew Tattersall, Ed Watkins, Freddie Sherrett , Alex Stockbridge and Freddie Sherrett yet again. The game ended with the score 40 - 0 to Burton.
In the three games played today the Burton team scored 15 trys ( 75 points ) and conceded none, what a great days rugby. The sun shone and Burton had won the Festival Trophy. Each and every player should be proud of what they achieved today.
