Burton 'A' 45 Mkt Bosworth 2nds 0 on 29th September 2007
A tentative start by both sides for the first 10 minutes saw Burton eventually start to assert themselves on the game as the evergreen Rob Scragg was again in support to be on hand to receive the ball and burst over the line for the first score. Then another forward surge by the dominant Burton pack saw Jon Hamilton be driven over for a second try, and this was quickly added to with a third when following another great scrummage the ball was swiftly moved to the backs for Russ Banton to scamper over for a try.
Burton were now completely controlling all aspects of the game with Mark Tweddle, Rob Scragg and Eddie Talbot demonstrating their know-how and cunning to continually give Burton the upper hand and allow Gavin Cole to control the game. With Burton again pressing Ben Peach broke blind to feed Cole who slipped the ball to Steve Cramp to score a fine try. Showing their uncompromising mood Burton’s forwards again stormed out of their own 22 and when Talbot got the ball on his own 10 metre line he raced up field for sixty metres to score and see half-time sound with Burton 31-0 in the lead.
The second half started with a confident Burton side being thwarted by a Market Bosworth team that did not intend being over run and they threw their all in to the came and on several occasions only the defensive qualities of Ben Stone and Ian Jones stopped them scoring. But Burton superior scrummaging and lineout ensured that Burton retained control as Stone and Hamilton both added further scores and with Ian Cartwright kicking five conversions Burton ‘A’ XV again recorded an excellent victory and kept a clean score sheet.
Finally Burton ably led by Charl Neethling, Rich Wilton and Scragg put more and more pressure on the home side and a good quick ball saw Ian Cartwright break through the defence to score under the posts and convert his own try to give Burton a 12-0 lead. But poor ball control by the Burton pack, at a ruck near their own line, saw Burton contrive to let the hosts steal the ball and score a try. But Burton had the last say when another storming drive by the forwards set up Ben Stone who raced in from thirty metres to put the final points on the board and give Burton a well, earned 17-5 victory.
