Camp Hill 2nds 5 Burton 'A' 17 on 22nd September 2007
A strong, looking Burton ‘A’ XV travelled to play Camp Hill on Saturday at their Haslucks Green Road ground and came away worthy winners after a good, close encounter with their opposition that saw Burton control and dominate throughout. In both scrums and lineouts the Burton pack set up an ideal platform to control the game, but their young enthusiastic hosts had other ideas and it wasn’t until two thirds of the way through the first half that Burton eventually put points on the board. Some good all round forward driving saw Rob Scragg, in his first game of the season after injury, following up in support to take the ball and drive over from some twenty metres out for his side to take the lead. But although Burton pressed hard this was the only score in the first half, mainly due to the defiant defensive work by the home team who tackled like tigers to keep their line intact.
So Burton turned round for the second half to have both the wind and slope in their favour and having made four changes all looked set for Burton to build on their single score of the first half. But Burton started to make heavy work of what had seemed like an easy task and allowed their hosts to continually frustrate the Burton side. But astute kicking by Russ Banton and Ben Peach kept the home side pinned back in their own half. Over elaboration in the lineouts, which Burton were controlling, continually let Camp Hill off the hook.
Finally Burton ably led by Charl Neethling, Rich Wilton and Scragg put more and more pressure on the home side and a good quick ball saw Ian Cartwright break through the defence to score under the posts and convert his own try to give Burton a 12-0 lead. But poor ball control by the Burton pack, at a ruck near their own line, saw Burton contrive to let the hosts steal the ball and score a try. But Burton had the last say when another storming drive by the forwards set up Ben Stone who raced in from thirty metres to put the final points on the board and give Burton a well, earned 17-5 victory.
