Derby 2nds 46 Burton 'A' 5 on 5th January 2008
For their first game of the New Year Burton ‘A’ XV visited Derby and although they made a spited start to the game they failed to retain possession. Playing into a strong wind Burton were soon a score down after Derby forwards has set up a rolling maul and driven over the line to score.
A period of solid rugby saw Burton get into Derby territory but again lost possession saw them driven back with some astute kicking by the Derby half backs. A lost line out saw Derby forwards again roll forward and shortly afterwards their No 8 drove over for their second try. This was the pattern for the rest of the half as Burton lost ball and Derby capitalised to score three more tries before the interval.
After an initial fifteen-minute spell in the home half Burton’s first half deficiencies again returned to haunt them as their hosts continually fed from Burton lost possession. After conceding two more scores Burton at last got on the score board following a long patient build up that eventually saw Pete Baum touch down in the corner for Burton sole score in this disappointing 46-5 defeat.
