Burton 'A' 69 Longton 2nds 6 on 13th October 2007

With local business man Mark Tweddle returning from his world wide deals to not only captain but also provide a new set of shirts for the ‘A’ XV all of the Burton team were on a high as they faced visitors Longton. With a good crowd watching and eager to whet their appetite’s before England humbled France they saw a high scoring game with Burton getting eleven tries as they handed out a rugby lesson to the Longton side.

With Tweddle instrumental in every move of this high scoring contest Burton started the game at pace and inside two minutes Tom Mayne had scorched down the touchline before touching down under the posts for Burton first score. Then Tom Gregory continued in the same vein as he produced the first of many penetrating runs and raced in to score the first of his brace of tries.

Burton’s front five were awesome as they dominated all the set plays and allowing the backrow to put a strangle hold on the game as Jon Hamilton added Burton’s fourth try. With so much good ball Daryl Banton was able to provide his backs with copious ball and a cross field kick saw his brother Russ pounce to score a try in the corner. More kicks saw Tristan Gill pressurise the Longton back three and swoop in for a further try just before half-time.

During the break Tweddle and Coach Andy Peach rang the changes and brought on Ben Peach, Ben Stone and Jamie Parker in an effort to try a different form of attack. From the kick-off Brendan Fall drove into the visiting ranks before off loading to John Drage who powered over for a try that Mark Tweddle converted from the touchline with an excellent kick. Burton’s pack were now in full flow with Tweddle, Lucas and Fall all taking some wonderful lines as they smashed into the opposition leaving their defence floundering in the dust.

More penetrative running by Mayne and Gregory saw Ben Stone released to race clear of the Longton defence as he ran forty metres to score. Then Ben Peach showed that his days spent at the Nottingham ice rink had not been wasted as his twisted and spun his way with graceful steps through the Longton ranks to slither over the line for a try.
