Trentham 1sts 47 Burton 'A' 0 on 8th December 2007
Once again a cold, windy and wet day greeted Burton as they travelled to play Trentham 1st XV with a team that had many changes from that selected. Against a well organised and drilled team Burton found themselves with very few answers to any questions that were asked of them as the home side quickly use its size and pace to put two scores on the board in the first 40 minutes against the elements.
The second half saw a similar patter but now with the wind Trentham piled on even more pressure with deep kicks and fast hard rugby that had the visitors reeling. A further five tries without reply saw the hosts reach 47 points with 10 minutes to play and whether by design or because of Burton’s never say die attitude these last ten minutes were the most encouraging of the match for Burton. Lead by Rich Wilton and Brendan Fall Burton started to put pressure on the home sideline and on two occasions almost scored. First Rory Peverill just failed to touch down after a fine blind side break and then Rich Paupe was all but driven over by the rest of his pack only for the referee to say the ball wasn’t grounded.
Although suffering a heavy loss Burton can be proud of the way they stuck at the game until the end never giving up and keeping battling until the final whistle.
