Burton 'A' 31 Wolverhampton 2nds 10  on 26th January 2008

Following on from their last two sound performances Burton started positively and soon made their visitor’s Wolverhampton they were in for a hard afternoon’s work. However, Wolves initially frustrated their hosts hopes with some excellent defensive work, but the pressure eventually told and Burton got on to the score board. A quick, tap penalty saw Ben Peach set up a rampaging Rich Culley who stormed over the line from some twenty metres out. Ian Cartwright added the extra points for a 7-0 lead

Unfortunately Burton now fell victim of their own success as they took their foot of the pedal and let their level of play drop to that of their opposition with a total lack of ball retention. With the wind behind them Wolves took full advantage of this poor play and by using the boot were soon encamped in the Burton 22. A good catch and drive by the visitors saw them score an unconverted try. Boosted by this score and helped by uncontested scrums following an injury to their prop the opposition enjoyed a period of control. But when a clearance was charged down by Ian Jones, who followed up to touch down and Cartwright’s extra two points further increased Burton’s lead and they didn’t look back.

After the break and with the elements behind them Burton soon increased their lead as Dave Noon scampered over for a try that Cartwright again converted. But Wolves hit back after a scrappy kick and chase saw then get another unconverted score. A penalty in front of the posts saw Cartwright maintain his 100% record as his kick sailed between the posts. A superb break by Russ Banton saw him carve through the opposition defence to score a try that Cartwright converted and Burton ran out worthy winner by 31-10.
