Burton 21 Ashbourne 15 on Mar 17th 2007

A hastily mixed Development and ‘B’ fifteen side took to the field on Peel Croft against a well, organised Ashbourne second team and emerged worthy winners in a closely contested match. The visitors started strongly and soon woke the home side into action as Gavin Cole was sparked into action with a superb break that saw him link well with Rob Scragg before finishing off the move with a try under the posts. With Cole making light work of the conversion Burton now had a 7-0 lead that saw the opposition bulky pack lumber into action as they used their size to full advantage as they stormed the Burton line. Some ten minutes later and after three successive unconverted tries from the opposition Burton reorganised themselves and got back into the game. With Cole demonstrating his kicking prowess to good effect Burton began to establish some control over the game keeping the ball deep in Ashbourne’s half. The Burton pack were now playing more as a unit and providing good ball for Ben Peach and Cole to distribute around the park. One such play saw an overlap produced and Ben Stone fed Steve Cramp into the space for the latter to race over for another Burton try, that Cole again converted with ease.

The second half started with Burton losing 14-15 and initially Ashbourne went for the kill but unlike their first half try scoring burst the Burton defence was excellent and refused to concede a point repelling all their efforts. These efforts were due to some solid scrummaging and lineout work and some great covering and tackling by Jamie Parker, Kev Billings, Sean Green and Martin Bird. After absorbing a twenty-minute spell of pressure Burton again found their composure and rallied to force play into the visitors half. An attacking lineout saw Scragg take good ball and release the Burton threequarters to display some excellent handling skills as the ball spun down the line to the irrepressible Simon Paupe who raced round two defenders before touching down halfway. This gave Cole an opportunity to again convert the try for the extra two points and put Burton into a match winning 21-15 lead. Despite Ashbourne staging a last minute effort the Burton defence held firm and the team emerged with a well, deserved victory.
