Aston Old Eds 4ths 0 Burton 'B' 45 on 26th January 2008
Burton continued their fine run of victories with a superb seven-try demolition of Aston Old Edwardians despite the opposition opting for uncontested scrums after the initial exchanges. Burton’s sheer size and power put fear into the opposition pack as Martin ‘Sheep’ Bird and his pack emulated a Pontypool pack of the sixties and seventies to make this a David and Goliath contest but this time Goliath won.
Although spirited Aston’s lack of expertise and size meant that the game was very one sided and any opposition attacks were immediately stopped by the ‘exocet’ tackling of Ben Stone and PJ Solomon in midfield. Tries by Pat Winter and Ben Stone in the first half helped set the seal as Solomon got a hat trick, his first for the club, in a second half that also saw Chris Lycett get a brace. All these tries were the result of superb teamwork and support, although one of Lycett’s did see him race seventy metres to outstrip the home defence. Conversions by Dave Ward and ‘White Boot’ Winter helped make up the 45 points.
This performance gives further evidence of Burton’s improvement as both last week and this week they have reversed results from earlier in the season and is testament to the regular effort and hard work now being put in by the team.
