Burton 'B' 25 Derby 4ths 0 on 1st March 2008
Burton ‘B’ XV returned to winning ways with a convincing 25-0 win to complete the double over near neighbours Derby on the Ox-Hay.
Playing with the very strong wind tries from Pat Winter, PJ Solomon, ‘Sheep’ Bird and Ian Fitzgerald coupled with two conversions and a penalty from the sniper like boot of Sam McNab sealed Burton’s victory in the first half.
Numerous times Fitzgerald was seen burrowing into rucks and mauls like a demented rabbit to secure possession for Burton to drive forward. Whenever Derby tried to attack explosive tackling by Solomon, assisted by Kev Billings and Chris Owen, cut them down. The Burton backrow master minded by Simon Collier was always on hand to nullify any other threatening Derby attacks, while Burton utilised the elements and their teamwork to run up all the points.
With the wind creating a game of two halves the second half saw Burton defending rather than attacking but the team still retained complete control as Derby’s ill-discipline and Burton’s tenacity combined to produce a scoreless second half. But overall the game was a tribute to Burton’s spirit and teamwork as the score line proves.
