Lichfield 3rds 5 Burton 'B' 8 on 24th November 2007
Burton ‘B’ XV recorded their second successive win as Sam McNab again stroked home an injury time penalty to win the game.
Last minute withdrawals reduced the strength of the Burton team but those playing again produced a performance that typifies this team with a fantastic spirited display. Early play saw the game swing from end to end as neither side could establish any domination but a break by Matt Tivey through the centre saw him held up on the home line. Unfortunately it was the home team who emerged with the ball and raced the length of the field to score an unconverted try to take the lead.
Early game would have seen Burton’s resolve crumple but improved spirits within the side were soon shown and from the kick-off Ian Fitzgerald took the ball forward like a rampaging Rhino into the Lichfield ranks. Supported by Pat Winter and Gary Potts good quick ball enabled Joe Counter to release McNab who ghosted through the Lichfield defence to score a try in the corner with home players just looking on confused and mystified.
So with scores all square it was all to play for in the second half Burton’s fantastic defence from Tivey, Chris Lycett andDave Ward plus some dogged forward play saw them push forward to pressurise the Lichfield line. Time and again Burton were denied any points by some excellent home defence but with time up and injury time being played another Burton surge saw Lichfield be penalised for high tackle on Kev Billings. So up stepped McNab for the second week running to slot the ball between the uprights for three points and give a deserved Burton side victory at 8-5.
