Burton 'B' 34 Uttoxeter 2nds 0
on 15th December 2007
Burton ‘B’ XV recorded their sixth successive win with a solid six try demolition of Uttoxeter 2nd XV on Peel Croft on Saturday. Bolstered by the return of all their regular ‘stars’ plus a couple of ‘A’ team players, sitting idle from their cancelled match Uttoxeter were no match for this reborn ‘B’ team whose usual team spirit was enhanced by some of the festive variety in order to keep out the bitter cold.
Sam McNab again master minded the victory with his usual stealth and military precision pulling all the strings at the right times to allow newcomer Pete Jay to demonstrate his antipodean skills. From the start Burton put a strangle hold on the game controlling possession and territory with Pat Winter and Kev Billings in the back row securing ball after ball for Ian Fitzgerald to streak like an over weight leopard into the opposition ranks. This combination of power and guile led to McNab opening the scoring himself after Joe Counter had created havoc in the visiting ranks.
The rest of the game followed this same pattern with Burton forwards dominating possession and setting up chance after chance for the skilful three-quarter. With little success Uttoxeter tried to stem this tidal flow but had as much luck as King Canute did and two further tries by John Collett before the break took the score to 17-0.
After the break, despite making 4 changes, it was much of the same as Burton continued to rule the game and with Jay dancing like his Maori ancestors as he darted through the visitor’s ranks to score his debut try things could only get better.
In fact two more scores by Rich Paupe and Ian Fitsgerald, with the former crashing over from five yards out while the latter raced fifty metres to score his effort, showed that it really was time for the festivities to begin. Dave ward and McNab added the dressing with a couple of conversion to give the ‘B’ XV a well, earned victory from a fantastic display of team rugby.
