Burton 5 Derby 32 on Feb 25th 2006
Derby soon showed their intent with an early try, but then found themselves under heavy pressure from a marauding Burton pack that hammered the visiting defence and after 10 minutes Ian Jones dived over for a try to level the scores at 5-5. Although both sides played good rugby no further scores were forthcoming in the first half.
In the second half Derby improved their performance and created many opportunities and but for the strong tackling of Tom Murphy, Ian Cross and Dan Eastwood would have added to their score. But after 15 minutes the pressure told and the Derby centre ran through to score under the posts. Minutes later he repeated this and put Derby into a 19-5 lead. Despite the Burton forwards holding their own Derby added two more tries plus an penalty to cruise into a comfortable lead that Burton never looked like catching. At the end of the day the ease with which Derby won will hopefully stir these young crofters to get training and put in some preparation for the County Cup Final, or else this will be another Burton side that has failed to hold the trophy for more than one year.
