Coalville Colts 20 Burton Colts 28 on 26th April 2008

Burton travelled to play their final game of the season against Coalville and bolstered by the return of the players who have recently been on first team duty soon showed the hosts that they were not intending leaving without the victors spoils.

From the kick-off Burton chased forward and turned over the ball from the ensuing ruck for Ben Marshall to off load to Richard James who cut back inside from the right wing to score under the posts. Dave Archer utilised the strong wind to send the conversion sailing high over the bar for the extra two points. Burton continued to play at pace and a searing forty metre break by Matt Roe put him clear to touch down in the corner and with distance or angle no obstacle Archer handsomely added the extra points to give Burton a 14-0 lead.

With Burton playing some of their best rugby of the season another flowing move across the pitch was finished off by James and Archer again landed the conversion. But Coalville at last got their hands on the ball and started to show some skill and strength to quickly get two tries before the break to get within nine points of Burton as the whistle sounded.

Now playing against the wind Burton had to defend stoutly and with their lineout stealing ball on plenty of occasions Will Peach was able to repeatedly clear the danger, but the pressure saw Burton’s penalty count increase and from one of these their hosts pulled back another three points.

But with Carl Timmis, Will Peach, Dave Archer, Jon Parkinson and Rich James playing their last Colts match and relishing the challenge on offer the whole team played out of their skin to ensure that the victory remained on stream. After two five metre scrums Dominic Taylor picked up and drove towards the line for the rest of the pack to carry him over for a try. Archer kept his 100% record intact with another great conversion to put Burton 28-15 in the lead. Despite a late final surge by Coalville, which saw them grab a try, Burton left the field worthy 28-20 winners of the final match of the season.
