Dudley Kings Colts 30 Burton Colts 14
on
15th September 2007 in National Cup

For their National Colts cup first round tie Burton travelled to play the Colts from National league side Dudley and came away defeated but with their pride intact after a bruising encounter. Burton started well but Dudley struck first with a converted try. However, helped by their powerhouse second row duo of Lew Johnson and Dan Eastwood, Burton took all the set scrums. This provided the Burton backs with plenty of ball and when Phil Harris stepped round his man and fed Dave Archer the latter raced 70 metres to score and convert his own try. But Burton lost their way and intensity and Dudley came back into the game to score another converted try before the break and go in 14-7 in front.

Despite some bone crunching tackles by Sam Benjamin and Dan Smith Burton just could not stop their hosts from adding further scores, and whether over-awed by their more illustrious opponents or just having an off day Burton could not raise their game to their usual levels. Although Burton did add a late try following a good passage of play that saw Lewis Brookes glide over for a try that Archer converted they knew when the final whistle sounded they had been beaten by a better side on the day, but possibly had not played to their full potential.
