Burton Colts 19 Lichfield Colts 38 on 19th April 2008

Burton missing six of their regular players, who were on first team duty, were unlucky to see Lichfield capitalised on a couple of friendly bounces to take an early lead in the game. This upped the spirits of the visiting side and with their fly half, helped by the wind, pulling all the strings they soon increased this lead to 26-0. But at last Burton started to show some signs of a revival with a stunning try that involved Rob Beddard and Joe Gazzard before Steve Robinson dived over in the right hand corner for a try just before the break. With the final kick of the half Will Peach landed the difficult conversion.

At the start of the second half Burton’s revival seemed to have petered out and Lichfield added further scores to their tally. But midway through the half Burton re-awoke and their forwards began to gain control. Some excellent rucking set up a platform for Will Peach to jink his way through the defence for a try. Further forward pressure kept Lichfield penned in their own 22 and after some great drives at the line the referee awarded Burton a penalty try as Lichfield resorted to illegal tactics. Peach added the extra two points to take the score to 26-19.

Lichfield responded with their own period of pressure and as Burton’s tackling standards dropped the visitors took advantage of this lapse to run in two tries, one converted, to take the game 38-19.
