Burton Colts 10 Walsall Colts 13 on 19th January 2008

in The Staffs Cup

Playing on Peel Croft against Walsall in this Staffs cup quarterfinal Burton narrowly lost due to a last minute try.

For the opening 20 minutes Burton lay siege to the visitors line, but Walsall defended well and Burton got not get a score. But Walsall then broke clear and from the resulting penalty took a 3-0 lead they held on to until the end of the first half.

Burton came out for the second half in a determined mood and newcomer Matt Rowe playing at flanker was very impressive. Walsall conceded penalty after penalty and one in front of the posts saw Will Peach level the scores. Now level Burton continued to press and looked certain to score but handling errors proved to be their downfall as chances went begging. Walsall hacked the ball clear from one of these dropped balls and raced upfield to score a try and retake the lead at 8-3 but Burton responded. Jono Parkinson breached the opposition defence to touch down and Peach added the extra two points to take the lead at 10-8 with three minutes remaining.

But as Walsall pressed Burton committed the sin of failing to clear their lines and a loose ball was snapped up by Walsall to drive over and score a try in the last minute to win the game 13-10.
