On Sunday Burton under 14's played their first match of 2008 and started the New Year in an emphatic way. Individually each and every player in the Burton side played extremely well , but more pleasing was the way they played as a team, supporting each other throughout.Early in the season Burton beat Tamworth 5 -0 and this game would show how Burton have come on so far this season.

Burton 43 Tamworth 0 on   Jan 6th 2008

The game started with Burton putting pressure on Tamworth straight from the kick off. The first scrum was to Tamworth , but the power from the Burton pack was such that they won the scrum against the head. Henry Whitfield was quick to see the ball at the back of the scrum and picked up and burst through for Burton's first try.Gibbons made a great attempt at the kick . The second try was a great forwards effort. Stuart Carter burst through  a couple of tackles before popping the ball into Josh Wilson who was in close support. Nothing was going to stop Wilson and he went over for a try. The final try of the half came from some quick thinking from the Burton flyhalf. Burton were awarded a penalty and as everyone waited for a kick to touch , Whitfield made a clever cross field kick to Tom Hunt on the wing. Hunt still had plenty of work to do but beat two Tamworth defenders to score. This was well converted by James Gibbons.

At half time the Burton players were warned that Tamworth would come back strongly. Indeed as the second half started Burton were having to defend their line. Hunt put in a great clearance kick from their own 22m area. There was some excellent defence from Burton with Callam Sanderman and Ross Burrows putting in some good tackles. But Burton were gaining in confidence and as the ball came out from a scrum Edwin Runagale made a powerful run up field. Again the Burton lads were linking up well . Alex Crisp made a great run and off loaded the ball out to Runagle who charged through to score a try , converted by Henry Andrew. Burton were looking better and better . From the kick off Henry Andrew collected the ball , beat one tackle and then popped the ball to the powerful Runagle who accelerated through the Tamworth defence and ran from his own half to score under the posts . Andrew again converted. Burton were now finding holes in the Tamworth defence and Will Turner took advantage of this when he broke through  and made a great run to score under the posts. Again Andrew was acurate with the boot. Burton were enjoying their rugby and a great performance was capped by Crisp with the final play of the day. Crisp showed great determination to break through several Tamworth players to score.
