Burton suffer only their second defeat this season after 3 late second half tries from Nottingham.
Burton kicked of into a stiff breeze and put their opposition under pressure immediately keeping them hemmed into their own 22. The opposition made the most of the strong breeze with a long attacking kick and only some good defence work by Adam Lloyd and Sam Smith prevented the first score. Nottingham kept up the pressure though scoring their first try under the posts after winning the ball from a Burton scrum on the 22 meter line. They failed to convert it 5 – 0.
Burton were again under pressure from the restart with Nottingham driving over but again some strong Burton defence held the ball up and prevented a score. After clearing their lines Burton were again under pressure but halted their opponents with some excellent defence. The first Half ended with Adam Lloyd scoring an excellent individual try, intercepting a poor pass on Burtons 10 meter line, breaking a tackle and scoring under the posts – John Briggs converted
Half Time Nottingham 5 – Burton 7
A very positive start to the second half saw Burton, with the wind behind them score within 5 minutes from the restart. Ed Watkins scoring in the corner following a Burton line out on their opponents 10 meter line. A difficult kick to convert was only just missed by John Briggs. Nottingham 5 – Burton 12
Nottingham began to fight back immediately scoring their second try after Burton were penalised at a scrum on their 5 meter line. The ball was passed the full width of the pitch and touched down in the corner. The conversion kick was short. Nottingham 10 – Burton 12
Nottingham’s 3rd try came after a Burton attacking move that started in their own half broke down – Nottingham won the ball back, scoring easily and converting the score to take the lead 17 – 12 with less than 10 minutes to go.
Burton won the ball from the restart but failed to take advantage. Both sides exchanged kicks looking for territory with Nottingham succeeding, isolating the Burton backs who without support lost possession and Nottingham scored their 4th try with only minutes left to play. 22 – 12, Burton heads were down.
Nottingham finished off the game scoring an individual try straight from the kick off, breaking several tackles in the process. The conversion was missed again
