Nuneaton 7 Burton 31 on Sept 30th 2007

A third consecutive win for Burton under 16's who won in impressive style after a somewhat slow start away to Nuneaton.

Burton travelled to Nuneaton for what is usually a hard and physical game with Nuneaton, and this game was no exception with the game ebbing and flowing in the first half, with Burton having slightly the upper hand. Having been penalised for feeding in the scrum, Burton started to turn the screw and following several more scrums and line outs saw Ed Watkins race over the try line for the only score of the first half, which was duly converted by Jon Briggs. Continual pressure from Burton scrum half Giles Rought-Witta saw his opposite Nuneaton scrum half falter at almost every scrum, a very impressive performance. Half time score was 7 – 0 to Burton.

Burton started the second half with more passion and drive, which saw an early 2nd try for Watkins, ripping the ball from a maul and diving through to cross the line, taking Burton into a 12-0 lead. The next try came through an interception on the Burton 22 metre line, when Jake Manning intercepted a pass and made good headway up field. Laying the ball off well through the hands of Sam Heptonstall and Nathan Taylor down the wing and found Giles Rought-Witta on hand to score the try, again unconverted taking Burton into a 17-0 lead.

The 4th try came when the ball was ripped free by Taylor and saw him charge down the wing again, this time with Alex Reeves in support, for Reeves to go over and score, which Briggs converted to take the lead to 24-0.

Burton then seemed to ease off slightly and allowed Nuneaton to score a converted try, taking the score to 24-7. This triggered Burton into life and dominance then returned. Having lost the use of front row prop Tom Worthy, Zach Meares-Davies was drafted in to his first every role as prop – well done Zach.

The final try of the morning came from a Burton line out 10 metres from the Nuneaton line, and in typical Taylor fashion, he grappled the ball free from the back of the maul and raced round the stunned Nuneaton pack to score, which Briggs duly converted taking the final score to 31-7.
