Burton Under 11's travelled the long distance to Worcester to play in a triangular tournament with hosts Worcester and Kidderminster.

Worcester 15 Burton 0 on   Dec 16th 2007

Burton opened the tournament against a very strong Worcester side. From the kick off Burton took the game to Worcester with 2nd Row Hugh Matthews launching an attack, using his power and strength and support of his fellow forwards took the play up to half way, Thomas Benjamin released he ball to Fly Half Alex Finny who got his backs going forward with a great pass, the ball went through all the backs hands and out to the winger Joshua Thorman who got tackled into touch, but a very promising start from Burton.

Worcester launched several waves of attack with Burton defending valiantly, centre Lewis mason and Full Back Ben Whitehouse putting in solid tackles. The first try for Worcester was slightly fortunate, following a great forward drive from Worcester but as the player went to ground the ball it was dropped but the referee did not see it and the try was awarded. Worcester on a high from their first try responded straight away and scored a great try with their backs running and passing well to release their winger to score in the corner. leaving the score 10 - 0 at half time.

In the second half Worcester dominated but Burton bravely kept them out with solid determination in their tackling. In the last minute of the game Worcester were on the attack, a great tackle from Jacob Brown stopped the attacker, the ball was spilled forward from Worcester but again not spotted by the referee, Worcester retrieved the ball and dived over the line to score the try.

The final score 15 - 0 to Worcester. Burton deserved more from this game but Worcester were deserving winners.

Kiddermister 10 Burton 15

In the second match Burton were dominant in the first half. front row forwards Josh Greenwood, Abe Furner and Adam Dolman were rampant in attack and 2nd rows Lewis Sturgess and Tim Robinson were solid in the scrum and like dogged terriers around the ruck and maul securing any loose ball for Burton. Burton opened the scoring with a great forward surge led by try scorer Josh Greenwood, the forwards mauled the ball all of 15 yards to the try line, great support play and solid driving before Josh finished the move off with the try powering over the line to score. With confidence high straight from the re-start Burton launched another attack this time through the backs, Alex Finney feeding the ball to his centres Tai Fellows and Sam Bridgen who released Winger and player of the day Aiden Hopkinson who beat several players before releasing the ball back to his supporting team mates. Burton earned a scrum 5 yards from the try line, the forwards were solid and secured the ball, Scrum Half Charlie Wooton broke down the blind side beat the last defender to dive over the line to score the try. To finish off the first half Fly Half Alex Finney broke through the Kidderminster defence to score a great solo try showing his great pace and side step on the way. At 3 - 0 at half time Burton thought that it was all over, but in the second half kidderminster came back scoring two great tries to get back in the game. Burton now had to dig deep and for 5 minutes defended bravely to keep out Kidderminster. Haydn Mabbott at full back tackled well as the last line of defence and cleared up any loose ball at the back. Burton finished the second half on a high with a great team attack, backs and forwards interlinking, passing and supporting and just falling short of the try line. The final whistle went and Burton sealed a well earned victory.

To end the day Burton played two short 10 minute games against Worcester, the first 10 minutes saw Worcester dominate running in 3 tries with no reply and could have been more if not for some good defensive work from Burton. Oscar Phillips at Scrum half made some great breaks showing his pace and dodging skills, whilst centre Sam Bridgen had a storming run up the centre of the field before being stopped short of the line. Joshua Thorman showed his pace after receiving the ball on the wing, flying past several defenders just to be tackled into touch on the try line.

The second 10 minutes, with a slightly changed Burton side gifted Worcester with an early try, but that was the last and final attack from Worcester, it was all Burton from here on in. From a Ruck in the middle of the park, Scrum Half Charlie Wootton got the ball out to his backs and Centre Thomas Benjamin outpaced the Worcester defence to score a magnificent try to kick start the big comeback. At 1-1 and Worcester defending, they put in a huge clearance kick up field which was nicely gathered by Full Back Ben Whitehouse, he returned a high up and under which was chased by the Burton back line, pressure on the Worcester defence broke down due to Burton pressure following the kick by Ben and Burton winger Jacob Brown picked up the loose ball and dived over the try line to take Burton into the lead. In the last 5 minutes Burton sealed it with another storming run from Centre Thomas Benjamin, from 10 yards out he received the ball and beat two players to score in the corner.

Tai Fellows was enormous in defence making tackle after tackle and even the biggest player for Worcester did not escape the mighty Tai tackles.

A great day of Rugby for all and every player should be very proud of their performances today representing Burton Rugby Club.
