March 9th 2008
On a bright sunny morning with just a slight chill in the wind Burton under 12's played host to a touring group of players representing Marple
As we all know touring sides tend to suffer from lack of sleep and excesses in other area's but in the warm up session Marple looked a big and lively group of players. Burton were able to field 2 sides and so Marple agreed to 2 games of a shortened duration.
But like the storm that hit Burton the following day the Burton teams were about to unleash their own gale force strength group of players upon Marple
Game 1: Burton 28 Marple 0
In the first game Marple chose to kick off and Burton prepared to recieve the ball. As this momentous game was about to commence the spectators warmed up on the side lines by mainly avoiding the swarming flies , until lou decided to eat the flying pests. The flies must have been aroused by the stale alcholic smell emitting from our own women wino Sarah.
Burton immediately recieved the ball and made ground, the familiar figure of Louis Sanders wreaking havoc on the opposition, breaking tackles and their defensive line meant that when he played the ball out DAN SHAW recieved it to use his pace on the outside to go past some of the Marple players to score for Burton, Dans try was neatly converted by the tiny terror known as ED NICHOLLS.
From the re-start it was Burton who controlled the ball and went through several phases of play involving the forwards and the backs to move the ball up field with some of the best controlled play the team have played this season. This time it was DAN SHAW who broke throught the Marple defence and played the ball out to LOUIS SANDERS, who in a reverse of the first try scored for Burton, again this try was converted by EDDIE NICHOLLS.
T here followed a period of Burton pressure and some solid defensive play as well as last ditch defence from Marple , who seemed stirred by the Burton onslaught to fight back. However their valiant efforts were dashed as the try scoring machine GEORGE MILLS took possession of the ball and scored again for Burton , again for EDDIE NICHOLLS to convert, as half time cam Burton were up 21-0
The second half began as the first had finished with Burton applying the pressure and Marple defending stoutly with a heroic tackle denying MILLS another try. The Burton pressure came from forward and back play stretching Marple to the limits, when againa LOUIS SANDERS broke through feeding the ball to ALEX NESBITT, who took on the Marple defence and offloading to JORDAN STURGESS who gratefully scored near the posts. Again this score was converted by the ver confident and capable NICHOLLS.After some more phases of Burton play the ginger haired ref blew for full time.
Game 2: Burton 28 Marple 0
After taking a well earned break Marple came out to face a fresh Burton team, The Burton squad allows two equally strong teams to be fielded in one day and well done to Marple for taking on this challenge.
This Burton team played like the first game, with flowing controlled rugby using every inch of the width of the pitch to stretch Marple and the power of the forwards to pul in their players. After several phases of good play Burton were close enough for the ball to go to ELLIOTT MINNS and for him to score, and guess what, EDDIE NICHOLLS converted again. Burton had all the play in the first half and were camped in the Marple half but were unable to capitalise and add to the score so ay half time it ended Burton 7 Marple 0
The second half saw Burton again applying the pressure and Marple on the back foot but fighting back well and on several occassions spoiled and disrupted our scrums. Once again the ball worked it's way down the line to EDDIE NICHOLLS, who converted hid own try.ED WAINMAN had some telling forays into the defensive line of Marple's, and when he saw the gap he didn't need a second invitation and dived over the line for Burton third try, which this time was converted by BENJAMIN WARD., OOH HE'S A LOVELY LAD..
Burton again used every aspect of their play to keep Marple pinned back and guessing who would be unleashed upon them and from where, for Burton were now playing with confidence and using the ball and making the right decision The final score of the game came from ELLIOTT MINNS who trundled over the line and scored another try which was converted by DAN SHAW. Final score another 28-0 Burton victory.
iI'D LIKE TO THANK MARPLE FOR THEIR ATTENDANCE AND FOR BEEN SPORTING ENOUGH TO ALLOW 2 GAMES TO BE PLAYED.
I'd also like to thank the "GAZELLE" type running across the pitch from one Burton mum.
AND FROM US ALL SARAH, HOPE THE LITTLE PROBLEM YOU HAVE GETS SORTED AND YOU DON'T FEEL TOO WASHED OUT NEXT WEEK.
