Burton Under 12's on March 16th 2008

Burton under 12's made the short journey to Sutton Coldfield with a large squad sufficient for two teams and our gracious hosts agreed to play 2 games of a shortened duration, for which we are gratefull.

Quality rugby by quality players is what we have come to expect from this Burton squad who seem to improve week on week as a team who play for each other.

The conditions were far from ideal because the heavy rain the night before had made the pitches very muddy and heavy underfoot and on the day the wind and cold meant it was goint to be tough going for both teams.

In the first half Burton played down the slight incline and went about the business of playing Rugby, The team used their strenght and size to dominate the forward play as at the set pieces they won scrum after scrum and at the set pieces controlled possession .The forwards controlled the play and as a result controlled the opposition, this led to the backs having room to play the ball out wide and on several occasions the ball was moved up and down the line without the opposition getting close. These phases of play meant that in the first half Burton scored three tries coming from JIM BOB , LOUIS SANDERS and ED WAINMAN, and the wee lad himself with the ever closer cropped hair EDDIE NICHOLLS. There were no conversions and so at the end of the first half Burton led 20-0.

In the second half Burton again continued witht the dominanace of play, although SUTTON did at times, to their credit, try to play their way out of trouble. This Burton team though just kept coming and coming relentless wave after wave of attacking rugby and pressure that would have breached the best of defences. Although playing up hill Burton again managed to score three tries  , one from JORDAN STURGESS and two from ED WAINMAN one of which was an interception of the ball off Sutton which broke their defence, resulting in a Burton triumph of 35-0.

This  first team was made up maily of the players who will be going on the up and coming tour to PONTINS, and from todays performance things for that weekend of fun and games look good.

As Richard Minns was pointed out to FINN ( an irishman ) it was a bit like a game the day before because BURTON ( in white ) overwhelmed SUTTON ( in Green ), does that ring any bells ?

So to the second game and again Burton fielded a side that again had quality and strenght running through it , however the Sutton coaches had fired their side up and they came out to regain some pride. This game proved to be a lot closer as neither side managed to dominate with both sets of players harassing their opposition and forcing ewrrors and creating turnovers, it was Sutton who drew first blood, but Burton ressponded through JACK RICHARDS and the first half ended even, one try each, 5-5.

The second half continued in the vain of the first half due a lapse in the Burton defence Sutton scored again in the second half but Burton never say die and battled on to score through ZACK. This never say die attitude of Burton under 12's was best displayed by young ANDREW BIRD, who in the second game saw one of the Sutton players break free and set off for the Burton try line, young BIRDIE was the last line of defence and made sure the Sutton player didn't get past him with a perfect lt timed tackle.one score for each team in this half meant the game ended with honours even 10-10.
