Under 7's at Rugby Lions festival on 7th October 2007
Burton under 7's travelled to the Rugby Lions annual festival for their first away matches which proved to be an exciting day out.
1. Burton 5 Old Northants 15
The first game against Old Northamptonians, was a rather scrappy affair, although it was an opportunity for the Burton team to "gel". Ben Gilleland opened the score line for Burton with a good try, supported by Elvis Drinkwater. It was a good first effort, but their opponents proved too strong winning the game 15-5.
2. Burton 25 Rugby 10
An excellent second game against Rugby Lions, which saw a more structured, determined Burton team. A superb sprint from Ben Gilleland ended with a try after only 30 seconds, with great support from all of the Burton team. Offensive pressure from Rugby was well covered by a blanket of Burton players defending with much more zest than from their first game.
Next up to score a superbly converted try was Ethan Lowing followed by a perfectly executed effort by Jacob Ruprecht. Ben finished the onslaught with two more tries to take his score to a hat trick. Rugby replied with two tries but couldn't crack Burton's tight defensive linep.
Probably Burton's best effort of the day, with consistent offensive and defensive play throughout.
3. Burton 5 Ampthill 15
Burton took their feet off the gas for this lacklustre performance against a far superior Ampthill. Burton's sloppy defence let their opponents through to score three tries, Ben Gilleland saving Burton's blushes by scoring their only try of the game to prevent a whitewash. The one hour gap between this and the last game didn't help Burton who had wound down after a hot dog and fizzy drink!
4. Burton 20 Luton 10
After their hot dog's and drinks had gone down, Burton were back on form for their final game of the afternoon with another top notch performance! Luton scored twice, but Burton replied with two whippet like tries from Ethan Lowing, and one each from Ben Gilleland and Jacob Ruprecht. The defenders worked well and made it difficult for Luton to break Burton's defensive wall.
Overall a great start for the Burton under 7's on their first tournament outing.
As their confidence grows, Burton's performance can only improve throughout the 2007-08 season. The kids are also really enjoying themselves making new friends along the way!!
Special thanks to all the parents for their support, the coaches and to Les Carter who helped in refereeing some of the oppositions games.
