Burton v Coalville on Dec 2nd 2007
Match 1 Burton 20-5 Coalville
Burton's, normally sound, defence were called into action early in the game, and they showed they had moved up a level to a solid defensive unit, not only forcing the turnover after 7 tags, but also forcing their opponents deep into their own half in the process. Burtons first few attacks though lacked the same quality, and the final ball often went astray. Once they got started though they amazed the crowd with an awesome display of fast running rugby and some good passing. Z Salt was the first to receive a pass that put him through to score. M Pride was the next to touch down after another Burton attack. The second half brought more of the same, C Hutchison scoring for the Crofters next. Coalville were strong rivals though and all of their hard work was rewarded when they finally breached the Crofters defence to score. Burton finished on a high with M Pride finishing off yet another impressive Burton move.
Match 2 Burton 30-35 Coalville
Burtons development squad took a huge step forward today, they showed a better line in defence, which held out under constant pressure, and when they went behind their heads never dropped and they were soon back in it through some good passing play which saw a O Ballyn score. The opposition attack then pulled 2 scores ahead, despite this, all the new Crofters were eager to touch the pill and C Hutchison soon pulled 1 back. The 2nd half started with both teams benefitting from some good attacks, T Smith bagging a hat-trick and Coalville scoring 4 tries to remain 2 ahead. Then with a brilliant piece of straight running C Hutchison ran through the visitors defence to score. The whole squad played for each other with a better understanding of the rules, and with a little fine tuning by the coaches, Burton should have another excellent under 8's team.
Match 3 Burton 25-10 Coalville
The mixed team gave everyone a game, and the mix of players worked well, Coalvilles defence looked good and so did the Crofters, with both teams forcing the 7th tag turnover. But once again it was the way Burton forced Coalville back that gave them the ideal platform for an attack that resulted in a Z Salt try. M Pride then decided to have a go at the straight line running and, with the odd side step, burst through the defence to score. Coalville pulled 1 back before 1/2 time. With a change of personnel at half time the team remained focused, and O Ballyn rounded off a very good day for himself with his 2nd try. With Burton now having the confidence to try new things the only thing to do was watch the youngsters throw the ball around like seasoned professionals. Further tries by C Hutchison and T Smith, and a last minute consolation try for the visitors wrapped up one of the best performances by the young Crofters.
