Burton Vets 5 Bham Civil Service 35
on 5th April 2008
On a wind-swept Ox-Hay Burton Vets found the Birminham Civil Service more than they could handle as the visitors threw the ball around at every opportunity. They used their younger legs to score three tries in each half plus one conversion and a penalty to tot-up 35 points against Burton’s solitary try.
Although Burton started well they perhaps flattered to deceived as this early control soon diminished and the visitors took total control, particularly in the loose. Andy Betteridege, Andy Tebbs and Darren Golder battled courageously against the odds and skipper Dave Brown continually implored his men for more effort but despite giving their best it wasn’t to be. A great take at a line out by Colin Wood saw the Burton side surge forward with one momentous drive and Ian Weakford took play to within two metres of the visitors line, but great defence kept out the Burton team. Then Mel Gilbert, again giving his all, raced forward with the ball in hand and when confronted by the opposition full back he passed the ball to Andy Lumly for the latter to dive over to score Burton’s only points.
Once again a courageous effort by the Burton team but despite all their efforts the younger, fresher legs of the opposition proved to be too much.
