Burntwood Vets 7 Burton Vets 33 on 23rd February 2008

Another fixture change, another away venue as Dave Brown’s ageing, but spirited, empire travelled to Burntwood before a five try haul completed a demolition of the hosts and his team returned home with their third consecutive win.

Their normal recuperation time saw Burton concede an early converted try, but once Chris Samways had set the ball rolling with a spectacular twenty yard dash that saw him bounce off four or five defenders before scoring the game was all Burton. Having seen Samways efforts Andy Tebbs also decided that the best way was forward. So instead of his usual fringing game he got hold off the ball and also bounced off defenders as he trotted ten metres for a try after Andy Betteridge had done all the hard work and raced sixty metres to set-up the score. Newcomer Fred Lumby scored his first try for the team when his supporting play saw him on hand to take the ball and dive over the line following a move initiated by Darren Golder and continued by Mel Gilbert.

With his forwards running rampant all afternoon Huw Davis had plenty of balls to show that there was still magic in his tiny toes. He twisted and turned the defence inside out to score two superb tries that were worthy of more than the one man and his two dogs that were the only spectators.

Kev Wrathall again had his kicking boots on and converted four of the five tries to produce this well-deserved 33-7 victory.
