Burton Vets 19 Nottm ModsVets 12 on 15h December 2007

Despite the bitterly cold weather conditions Burton Vets produced an incredible display of open running rugby to defeat Nottingham Moderns 19-12 on Saturday. Starting brightly with a few younger brethren from the other cancelled fixtures at the Club the Vets soon made inroads into the opposition with their forwards ably led by Kev Wrathall and supported by Chris Samways, Andy Betteridge, Rob Ridley and Tom Phillips gaining huge amounts of ground through surging rolling mauls. This enabled the younger Peach’s, Ben and Will, to exploit any gaps that appeared in the Moderns ranks and very soon following a fine break by Ben Peach he linked up with his younger cousin Will for the latter to race over for a try. Will Peach converted his own try and so gave Burton a 7-0 lead after just 15 minutes play.

Unfortunately Notts retaliated with two quick scores of their own to take a 12-7 lead at the break. But in the second half Burton upped their efforts and soon drew level when the ever supporting Ridley was on hand to take a pass and dive over for a try after a fine move that had seen the ball go through at least 6 pairs of hands and some 50 metres.

Now level Burton switched some players bringing on more youth in the shape of Dave Viles and Dave Noon for the aging legs of Colin Wood and Adie Bullock. This immediately paid dividends as the two Peach’s again combined to tear holes in the opposition ranks before releasing Noon who used his pace to run 60 metres to score under the posts. Wrathall converted this to give the Vets a well deserved victory of 19-12 in a good natured match.
